My practice begins with walking. Moving through cities — Melbourne, Berlin, Venice, Cairo, Mexico City — I pay close attention to the surfaces and boundary forms that most people pass without seeing. Wrought iron gates and grilles, decorative tilework, clipped hedges, layered walls. These are the places where I stop.
I am drawn to vernacular decorative forms because they are repositories of cultural memory — encoding the histories, aspirations and identities of the communities that made them. As the child and grandchild of migrants and refugees, I have a personal stake in this reading. I know that thresholds are not neutral. They carry the memory of those who crossed them, and those who were turned back.
My work moves across photography, digital collage, installation, sculpture and performance. The photograph is always the starting point — a trace of attention — which I expand, fragment and translate into other forms. There is often humour in this process: I am as likely to find something absurd and glorious in the overlooked and kitsch as I am to find something serious. I elevate the banal and occasionally puncture the pretentious.
Underlying all of it is the same question: what does the built world tell us about who it was made for?
